My name is Khoi-Nguyen Tran, the chief investigator of this research project on link recommendation on Facebook.
I am writing to ask if you would consider participating in this research by installing and using our Link Recommendation (LinkR) Facebook App. The results of this research may be published in conference papers or journal articles. This research is funded by the Google under the Google Research Awards, but we have NO obligations to Google and will NOT provide data collected in this research to Google, except performance and other aggregate statistics that will be published.
The purpose of this research is to explore the effects of and factors contributing to actively and passively recommending links on Facebook. Passively recommending links mean the links you posted on your Facebook Wall and actively recommending links mean you post links on your friends’ Facebook Wall. Data collection from LinkR will be take place over a six month period (from 15 August 2011 to 15 February 2012). You do not have to participate for the entire period, but please try to participate for at least two months.
Research outcomes
- Provide a better user experience on Facebook with the links shared by your friends.
- Contribute towards an understanding of how links are shared on social networks and the influence of active and passive sharing of links.
- Contribute algorithms that improve the task of recommending links.
Research objectives
- To identify factors influencing how users view and share links on Facebook.
- To develop and evaluate different link recommendation algorithms and explore user behaviour towards these links shared on Facebook.
